Japanese multiplication trick

When we introduce carpentry or construction math to math curriculum specialists, they often call them "tricks" or "shortcuts".  Is it fair to call this a trick?  Does it work in all cases?

And of course the most important question to me is, "Does this help anyone understand this math operation any better or differently?"

All said, in watching both examples in this video, I found myself thinking, "Most people using the traditional approach would have been done by now."
