Formatting a Research Paper

The image below might be helpful in understanding the sections of a formal research paper submitted to a research journal.  It is much more than teachers would expect of a high school student, unless perhaps you were submitting to a Junior Academy of Sciences in your state.

Increasingly, many journals seek an abbreviated format of 3000 words or less, no more than 6 citations, and no more than one Table or Figure.  The intended audience is a "sophisticated lay audience" or "an educated and well-read person who may not have expertise in your field".

You should look for guidance in the journal for recommendations of APA, MLA, or other preferred formats.  Purdue Owl is a great resource for most all questions about formatting.
