New After-School Resources for Coding in North Arliington
reposted from ARLnow:
A kid-focused coding academy is in the works at the Lee Harrison Shopping Center, and it’s already enrolling families. Code Ninjas, a programming “dojo” teaching skills like building video games and debugging code, has filed permits to take over a 900-square-foot space on the shopping center’s lower level at 2449 N. Harrison Street. The school plans to open in June, according to its Instagram page.
“At Code Ninjas Arlington, kids don’t just learn how to code — they build games, solve real-world challenges, strengthen critical thinking skills, and gain the confidence to create the future,” wrote the company, which has over 400 locations, including spots in Alexandria and Fairfax County.

Arlington Career Center Updates Coming Soon
Largely due to parents' misunderstanding or misconceptions of the relationship between Arlington Tech and the school system's broader Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, school officials are again reconsidering how the new Grace Hopper building housing Arlington Tech and the Career Center programs will be used. This comes at a time when nearly all STEM education funding and state and federal priorities are explicitly connected to developing the future technical workforce.

Amid controversy, School Board delays programming decisions at new Career Center space

School Board members are giving themselves extra time before making final decisions on rearranging the locations of some non-traditional secondary programs.
Rather than being taken up the first week of February, as would be the typical cycle following its Jan. 22 presentation as an information item, final discussion and vote will be taken two weeks later.
The delay will allow for more community engagement, School Board Chair Bethany Zecher Sutton said at the meeting.
Waiting until the Feb. 19 meeting for final action will “give us four weeks to continue to hear from the community, engage with staff and make sure we have done all of our homework,” Zecher Sutton said.

Marymount University Launches Regional Workforce Initiative
from the Marymount University blog:
Marymount University to lead regional tech workforce initiative with development of NOVATech Works Hub
This project is funded in part by GO Virginia, a state-funded initiative administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) that strengthens and diversifies Virginia’s economy and fosters the creation of higher wage jobs in strategic industries.
The project positions Marymount as a central mover in one of the region’s most urgent economic priorities: preparing workers for jobs in emerging and rapidly evolving technology fields.
“As technology becomes more complex and interconnected, the workforce must also change,” said Dr. Diane Murphy, a distinguished professor in the Marymount School of Technology and Innovation who will serve as Project Director for the NOVATech Works initiative. “Many organizations are doing their bit to help in the needed reskilling and upskilling efforts. NOVATech Works will coordinate all these resources, so individuals can see all the options available for them through an AI-enabled hub and motivate them to stay in the area and

APS plans to double student enrollment at Arlington Tech by 2029-30
from ARLnow:
County school leaders have announced growth plans for the Arlington Tech program, which will include a doubling of the student body by the 2029-30 school year.
At the same time, Arlington Public Schools confirmed Friday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. as the application deadline for county students interested in vying for spots at the Arlington Tech program — and other option schools and programs — to have their applications submitted.
County school leaders will use the opening of the new Grace Hopper Center in August to provide the additional space needed for expansion of the Arlington Tech program from 500 to 1,000 students in a four-year process.
According to school leaders:
“This expansion ensures that more students can access Arlington Tech, which blends rigorous academic instruction with innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways in STEM fields and emerging technologies, through project-based learning, dual-enrollment pathways towards an associate’s degree and year-long senior ‘capstone’ through internships with industry partners.”
APS leaders said the expansion comes at a critical time for preparing students for
